PlantEdits is a reliable service provider specializing in plant transformation and genome editing. Based in Lincoln, Nebraska, we offer a comprehensive suite of services:

  1. Expression Vector Construction: Customized expression vectors for genetic engineering applications.
  2. Cas9 Design and Assembly: Cas9 design and constructs for guide-multiplexing experiments.
  3. Transgenic Plant Development: Development of transgenic plants for major crops, including soybean, canola, maize, sorghum, and wheat. While the mentioned genotypes are available, we are open to working with other plant genotypes upon customer request.
    • Soybean Genotypes: Thorne, Maverick, Williams, Jack, Lee 74, Asgrow 3244, Magellan, and customers’ choice of genotypes (for the genotypes not listed here, please contact us for service details).
    • Canola.
    • Wheat Genotype: CB037.
    • Maize Genotypes: LH244, B104, H99 (testing H94 for potential inclusion).
    • Sorghum Genotype: TX430 (sweet sorghum, like Ramada, available upon request).
    • Camelina, Arabidopsis, tomato and tobacco.
  4. Verification Techniques: Leaf painting, PCR, RTPCR, and southern blotting, and ELISA.
  5. Long TDNA with Multiple Gene Cassettes: We have successfully developed transgenic soybean and sorghum with 5-8 gene stacks. Currently, we’re exploring the efficiency of transforming 10-15 gene cassettes into the specified plant genotypes.

The efficiency and reliability

Plant genetic engineering involves introducing beneficial traits or eliminating negative ones, thereby enhancing the quality and productivity of crops. Following transformation, transgenic plants undergo a series of tests to identify the most robust and safe varieties for commercial distribution.

Among the various techniques for plant genetic modification, Agrobacterium-mediated transformation is preferred for its advantages such as lower copy numbers, which simplifies the breeding of homozygous lines, and its integration into the plant genome with minimal chromosomal disruption. However, the complexity, time, and cost involved in plant transformation pose challenges for smaller laboratories and businesses with limited resources. The introduction of morphogenic regulators, like Baby boom and Wuschel, has expanded the range of plant species and tissues amenable to transformation. Nonetheless, the subsequent removal of these regulators remains a time-consuming step, rendering the process less efficient for many companies engaged in trait development.

With over 15 years of experience, PlantEdits specializes in enhancing plant transformation processes through advanced bacterium infection techniques and plant regeneration. Our staffs have expertise in genetic engineering for a variety of crops including sorghum, soybean, maize, canola, and wheat. Clients can expect the delivery of T1 seeds within a 6-8 month for soybean, and 7-10 months for corn and sorghum. Our capacity to handle multiple vectors—3 to 6 per week for each staff member—along with our ability to incorporate large T-DNAs containing 5-8 genetic elements into a single binary vector, enables comprehensive pathway analysis involving diverse enzymes related to seed composition and stress response. We are in the process of creating an extensive repository of regulatory elements, such as tissue-specific and stress-responsive promoters, testing delivery of 10-15 genes and continuing improvement of our plant transformation services.
